Ted’s Oldtimer Lapaz Batchoy

     Lapaz, Iloilo is perhaps most famous nationwide for its delicacy, batchoy. While many food stores have tried to imitate its unique taste, none have yet found the exact combination of tangy ingredients and home-cooked flavor of the original. Those looking for the real deal need only visit Ted’s Oldtimer Lapaz Batchoy, owned by Hilario Borro and Adelfa Lepura Borro, the daughter of one of the dish’s innovators and creators, Ted Lepura. Ted opened one of the first batchoy stalls in a market in Lapaz in the 1940s; since then, the eatery has transformed into one of Iloilo’s most famous restaurants. In the hands of Ted’s daughter and her husband, the business has spread nationwide, with 19 branches throughout Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Filipinos from Manila to Roxas to Gen. Santos can now taste an authentic bowl of La Paz batchoy, still containing the homemade goodness of the real thing.

     With its purpose of carrying on a general lumber business ans engaging in the manufacturing and processing of wood, AJ Wood Products, Inc. dwells not only in making negotiations with patrons all over the country, but the corporation also prioritizes clientele residing in the United States, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Guam, Japan, and China, among others.
     AJ Wood Products commenced commercial operations in 1979 under the trade name A & J Enterprises, which was then registered in owner Alarico Lim's name as a single-ownership venture. However, the over-all success of their conglomerate does not depend only on Alarico's business handling alone, but is also merged together with the management of finances according to his spouse and partner Juliana Lim.
     Located in Bo. Elpidio Paras
A Modern Entrepreneur

     Elpidio Paras understands the link between modern technology and business. After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1974, he opened an electronics repair company that installed some of the first digital lighting and amplified sound systems in discos in Visayas and Mindanao. In the 1980s, he ran the Sesame Sandwich Shop, a fast food restaurant offering widescreen TV coverage of sports events and music videos. He also opened Paras Video, which became the largest video rental shop in Mindanao.
     His firm Paras Electro Systems spearheaded the spread of satellite television throughout Visayas and Mindanao, building and installing satellite dish antennas in homes, restaurants and hotels. In the 1990s, he began building antennas for the cable television industry, and today, Parasat Cable has grown into a state-of-the-art fiber optic and coaxial cable network, providing over 70 channels of programming, broadband internet service and Voice-over-IP telephony to its customers across the country.

Matias & Terry Apistar
A Personal Approach in Banking

     Matias Apistar and his wife Terry did not start out in the property leasing and food catering business. Mr. Apistar is a practicing doctor while Mrs. Apistar is a dietary counselor. The couple began renting out apartments mainly to have a consistent income even after retirement.
     "Advanced thinking is very important," says Terry. "Strike when the iron is hot! And while you can earn, you should also enjoy the comfort that it can give to you." This wisdom led the couple to put up the Pensionne Inn and A&J Building in Jaro, Iloilo City, home to many bachelors and families. The building also contain Dr. Apistar's clinic and Apistar Food Catering, a business handled by Terry.
     Starting their new business was easy through the services of Queenbank, which provided the loans for construction and expansion of the buildings. The couple also secured a car loan for their food catering business, which delivers food around the city.
